What the MIFARE 1K Classic is good at
MIFARE 1K Classic is the standard physical credential in the gym sector. The format is mature, widely understood, and supported by the large majority of access control readers without any special configuration. 1 KB of memory is sufficient for typical access control use and for storing additional data such as member identifiers. Tags are straightforward to programme and roll out into existing systems. Gatech supplies them in small quantities across the entire European region, including the UK, Norway and Switzerland, and in larger quantities anywhere in the world.
Compatibility
Works with most access control systems on the market. The main exceptions are systems using proprietary encrypted keys, which require tags pre-programmed to that system's specification. If you are unsure whether MIFARE 1K Classic tags will work with your existing system, Gatech can help verify compatibility before you order. Note that MIFARE 1K Classic tags come in both 4-byte and 7-byte UID versions, and the wrong byte length may not be recognised by your system. Gatech can advise on the correct version for your setup.
Security
MIFARE Classic 1K uses an older security architecture that can technically be cloned by someone with the right equipment and knowledge. In practice this requires a deliberate effort, and the realistic consequence in a gym context is that an unauthorised person gains access using a copied credential, rather than any data breach or financial exposure. For most gym and fitness environments this is an acceptable risk given the cost advantage. For offices, corporate facilities or any environment with higher security requirements, MIFARE 1K Classic is not recommended. DESFire EV2/EV3 tags are the appropriate choice for those sites.
